2011 QN workshops

'Business Planning' – April 2011

Speakers included:

  • Kath Lancaster - Independent Nurse Consultant - Essential steps to prepare a business plan – Showed how to business plan and prepare a business case to demonstrate the need.
  • Fiona Hartfree - Directorate Lead Nurse, Adult Mental Health, Hampshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Presented the next steps in securing support and funding for your idea - indentify, persuade and win.
  • Wendy Fairhurst - Nurse Partner, Marus Bridge Practice, Chandler House, Worsley Mesnes Health Centre, Wigan: Took a closer look at Wendy’s real life example to understand what it takes to get your idea funded and the challenges with implementation.

'Policy Influencing explained' – June 2011

 Speakers included:

  • Alasdair Mackenzie - Parliamentary Outreach Officer, Parliament House: Spoke about Westminster and showed the audience how to get involved with the work of parliament.
  • Deborah Sturdy - Head of Dementia Care, Southern Cross Healthcare: Showed how to influence the policy development process – policy working groups, government consultations and civil servants.
  • Candice Pellett and Carol Singleton – Queen’s Nurses: Offered insight about their experiences of being involved in policy influencing activities
  • Emma Taggart - Campaign and Public Affairs Consultant: Spoke how to achieve change in policy and practice including advice in working with supporters. 
  • Joanna Sagnella - Communications and Events Officer, Queen’s Nursing Institute: Provided an overview of QNI’s campaign Right Nurse, Right Skills and how to get involved.

Influencing Commissioning – November 2011

Speakers included:

Claire Old, Emergency Care Pathway Project Manager, Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Helped participants understand commissioning policy and new clinically-led commissioning framework.  Also gave QNs hints and tips about how to work effectively with commissioners.

Tina Cookson, Assistant Director of Nursing, Midlands and East. Helped participants navigate the commissioning cycle and the role that QNs might play.

Julia Shirtliffe, Head of  Palliative Care Services, East Anglia Children’s Hospices. Julia shared her journey of developing a hospice service and how she handled commissioners and the commissioning process over a number of years.

Wonderful to hear how a hospice service has developed.  Very inspirational, gave me lots of ideas.

Really good. I now have a better understanding of the process and structures involved with the commissioning process.

This was a very worthwhile day – glad I came!
