Six million people in the UK currently care for someone they know - usually a friend or a family member. If all this care was provided by the State, it is estimated that it would cost nearly £120 billion a year. In personal terms, being cared for by a relative or friend is of huge importance to many people, and some simply could not live without it. And all of us will provide care for an elderly or sick relative or friend at some point during our lives.
Community nurses often work with carers, to support them in the vital work that they do. It's very important that community nursing teams have the skills and resources to help the six million carers in this country, particularly in times of crisis. Community nurses can also give much needed advice that makes the carer's job easier, and the person they care for more comfortable.
In this part of the website we give some information about the work of some carers charities and how they are working with the QNI, for the benefit of patients. Please click on the links in the left hand menu bar to find out more.
If you have a story or a query about any aspect of caring for someone or being cared for, please contact us at mail@qni.org.uk and we will try to help.
