2009 saw the 150th anniversary of District Nursing in England. In 1859 Mary Robinson, the first District Nurse, was employed by William Rathbone in Liverpool to nurse the sick poor in their own homes.
The anniversary was commemorated in dozens of events around the country, by healthcare organisations, universities, and voluntary groups.
