William Rathbone has been a Trustee of the QNI since 1974 and is a member of the Remuneration Committee and the Nomination Committee. He also served as a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee for many years.
For 24 years from 1974, he was Vice-Chairman of Council. As a great-great-grandson of the founder of district nursing, he continues the family tradition of active support for the QNI (see our sister site DN150).
Following National Service in the Royal Artillery, which included a year on active service in Malaya, he went up to Oxford where he read philosophy, politics and economics. This was followed by 29 years with the Ocean Group in shipping, in services to the offshore oil and gas industry and in the marine transport of liquefied natural gas. He then moved to be the Chief Executive of a medium-sized national charity helping older people in need for the next 12 years.
Since retirement in 2001, he has continued his lifelong voluntary involvement with the world of charity and is currently a trustee or otherwise involved with 7 charities.
